Winter is prime viewing time for the migrations of snow geese and trumpeter swans in the Skagit Valley. The snow geese are wintering in North Puget Sound from their breeding grounds on Siberia's Wrangel Island and mainland. You can usually see them foraging in the farmland west of Mount Vernon well into March and possibly April.

Compressed Girl Geocaching in Skagit CountyHave you tried the relatively new sporting activity called Geocaching? It is an outdoor activity in which the entire family can participate. Geocaching is a lot like a treasure hunt where (you) the treasure hunters use GPS enabled devices (GPS receiver or smart phone) to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world. If you like, you can become part of the online geocaching community and share your experiences with other geocachers.

A typical cache is a small waterproof container. The container usually has a logbook inside. The geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their name or initials, or an established code name from a geocaching website. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers may have items for trading inside. Usually these would be small toys or trinkets of little value. Don't forget to bring some with you to exchange with the ones you take!

You can find out more at Geocaching.com . When using this site, you can search for caches using the zip codes from Skagit County, which are as follows: 98221, 98229, 98232, 98233, 98235, 98237, 98238, 98241, 98255, 98257, 98263, 98267, 98273, 98274, 98283, 98284, and 98292. There is also a mobile app from geocaching.com that you can download to your smart phone to begin your geocaching adventure.

Skagit Speedway is the heart of Sprint Car Racing in the Pacific Northwest. If you are interested in watching sprint cars of all classes compete in weekly shows, this is a good place to do it. They have complete concessions and souvenirs, and even allow those so inclined to camp out overnight.

The crowd is a great mix of hardcore racers and casual fans. Be prepared to get dirt in your teeth, ears, eyes, and hair....as the dust swirls up from the track and coats everything in its way. Check out their website for directions, as well as more information on their scheduled races and entry fees.
